Drink Your Greens?…. YES PLEASE!
Banana, Strawberry and Spinach Smoothy
Okay so at first this recipe is going to seem a little strange but once you try it, I think it will become one of the regulars for a couple of reasons! Firstly the kids LOVE it and so do I! Ruby always asks for it and they are always back for seconds! Secondly I love the fact that I am able to get a hit of green raw spinach into the kids and they enjoy drinking it!
So here it is –
INGREDIENTS:
2 Small Banana’s (Or one large one)
2 Large strawberries
200g Milk
50g Vanilla or Plain Yogurt
Big Handful of Baby Spinach
10g of Agave Nector (Or you can use a small amount of honey)
METHOD:
Place all ingredients into the TM bowl and blend for 20 seconds, on Speed 6.
HINTS AND TIPS:
- Agave Nector – It’s a great natural sweetener. It is a little bit sweeter then honey but has a lower GI index then Honey or Sugar. It’s a brilliant Vegan alternative. It’s great in cold or hot drinks as it dissolves very easily. I love to use it in cooking and drinks as a healthy substitute for honey or sugar. I found an organic bottle at the health food shop.
- Baby Spinach – Make sure you use the baby spinach. The larger bunched spinach requires cooking to mellow the bitter taste while you can eat the baby spinach raw as it has a milder and sweeter taste. The healthy benefits from spinach are fantastic. It is a great source of iron, calcium, chlorophyll, beta carotene (needed for the production of vitamin A), vitamin C, riboflavin, sodium and potassium.
- On a side note – The sulphur content of the spinach will help to cleanse the liver… So for this little vixen after a few too many bubbles last night – it’s got even more benefits 🙂
- We like to add the strawberries and have found that they are back in season in our local area. You can add other berries if you wanted to.
- This amount makes enough for a couple of glasses but you can add more or less to the recipe as needed.
- We call it the Green Monkey but if you have little ones who love Shrek you could always re-name it the Ogre Smoothy!
